Mt. Jerome Cemetery in Dublin, Ireland - Laura Jane Boyd Cooper 1853-1921 - Part 2

There is a plot that has several of my ancestors buried in Mt. Jerome Cemetery in Dublin, Ireland. No, I was not at this cemetery in Dublin; although, I wish I was there to see it for myself.

Headstone C-106 at Mt. Jerome Cemetery in Dublin, Ireland. Photo taken by Barbara Boyd Hopkins.

I recently posted about my great-grandmother, Laura Jane BOYD Cooper. She is my father's paternal grandmother. I concluded with

"Laura Jane is buried in Mt. Jerome Cemetery in Dublin at Grave C-106 Grant 2760. This information was researched by a genealogist in Ireland for one of my Boyd cousins. On the actual cemetery card it stated the informant as George Corcoran, her son-in-law. I would love to see a photo of her headstone, if she has one."

My third cousin, Barbara Boyd Hopkins, was at Mt. Jerome Cemetery in 2015. She took the picture of the above headstone at section C-106. There is no mention of Laura Jane Cooper on the headstone.

This week, I was visiting my local Family History Center focusing on Mt. Jerome Cemetery records which are now online only at these centers apart from Salt Lake City. These records are not yet indexed. My first section was to look at the Index Register of Burials for Mt. Jerome Cemetery. Finding 1921, Laura Jane COOPER is listed in the alphabetical C section with Register No. 1501.

Secondly, I look at the actual Register of Burials. I find Cooper, Mrs. Laura Jane. She is listed under "No. for the Year 1921" at 1501 as stated in the previous index.

Register of Burials. Volume 23-24. 1915-1922. Microfilm #910,613. Online film #004029920. Image 722 of 787. Accessed San Diego Family History Center : 19 July 2017.

This page verifies that Laura Jane Cooper died on 28 November 1921 at Meath Hospital of Cancer at the age of 61. She was buried on 30 November 1921 in Registration District of 3 South. She is buried in a [family] plot in "No. 1 grave." She is buried in Section C - Subdivision 106. She is listed in Perpetuity Grant No. 2760. She is buried with a Granite Monument. Here is the verification of George Corcoran, 22 Turlough Terr[ace] of Fairview, her son-in-law, listed as "Relationship of the Attestant." As stated in a previous post, Laura Jane's daughter, Elizabeth Cooper CORCORAN, died 2 months previously of Multiple Sclerosis on 11 September 1921. A future goal is to research this index to find out if Elizabeth was also buried at Mt. Jerome.

Thirdly, the above lead me to find the Perpetuity Grant
#2760 in the Registry of Grants in Perpetuity of Burial in Mt. Jerome Cemetery, 1861.

Here is the jewel I was looking for! Laura Jane Boyd Cooper is buried with her mother, Jane Carrick Boyd who died in 1901; 2 brothers, Robert Boyd 1869 and Andrew Boyd 1888; maternal grandmother, Ellen Carrick 1885; maternal grandfather, John Carrick 1861; her mother's eldest sister or Laura Jane's aunt, Isabella Carrick 1852; and Lillian Carrick 1877, who was Laura Jane's aunt by marriage to her uncle Andrew Carrick.

There are only two of the above names engraved on the front side granite monument. John Carrick 1861 with eldest daughter, Isabella Carrick 1862. John's widow, Ellen Carrick purchased the Perpetual Right on 8 November 1861 (time between the deaths of her husband and daughter). This was updated in 1885 by daughter, Jane Boyd and updated again in 1902 by granddaughter, Laura Jane Cooper.

My first reference to Mt. Jerome Cemetery. Memory card in author's possession.

My cousin, Barbara, and I wonder if we should have the stone re-engraved to reflect all who are buried in Plot #C-106 for future generations.

There are four sides to this family plot monument. The front side is still readable as seen in first photo of this blog. Notice the broken top of the granite post.

Off to the left side from the front, are two more names of Ellen Carrick and Andrew Boyd engraved on the family monument. The rest is unreadable.

The other two sides are also unreadable.

Area where the four infant children of Laura Jane Boyd and Alexander Cooper were buried with no headstones. Many of the headstones were missing, broken or under dirt. Photo by Barbara Boyd Hopkins. 2015

The above photos will lead me to return to Mt. Jerome's Burial Index to find more family members related to the Carrick, Boyd and Cooper lines of these particular families.

I was finally relieved to find proof of Laura Jane Boyd Cooper's burial at Mt. Jerome Cemetery.

Laura Jane Boyd Cooper 1853-1921 - Part 1

St. Ann's Church on Dawson St. in Dublin.

Laura Jane BOYD Cooper was my great grandmother. She married Alexander Sisson COOPER on 19 July 1875 in Dublin, Ireland, in St. Ann's Church. She was the eldest and only daughter of William BOYD and Jane CARRICK.

William BOYD was a commercial traveller in Dublin, Ireland, and also had a glass manufacture business in Glasgow, Scotland.

"Scotland Births and Baptisms, 1564-1950," database, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XT5H-D3T : 2 January 2015), Laura Jane Boyd, 17 Jul 1853; citing , Duddingston, Midlothian, Scotland, reference 2:17HSFPX; FHL microfilm 1,066,685. Accessed 6 Oct 2005.
Laura Jane BOYD was the eldest and only daughter with 6 younger brothers including:

William Henry Boyd 1854-1917
John James Carrick Boyd 1858-1943
Alexander George Boyd 1859-1874
Andrew Lockhart Boyd 1863-1888
Robert Joycelyn Boyd 1864-1869
Male Boyd 1875-1875

All of these children were born in Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland.
The Boyd family lived at 14 South Frederick Street (now an Italian Restaurant) in Dublin, Ireland, above his business.

Alexander Sisson COOPER and Laura Jane BOYD had nine children. You can find them listed in Alexander Sisson Cooper's blog post.

Laura Jane also took care of her elderly mother, Jane CARRICK Boyd, until  her mother's death in 1903.

In 1905, Laura said “Goodbye” to her husband and
youngest son, Alex Jr. as they left for America. Her eldest daughter, Laura Jane Cooper Dawes, and two other sons, John Carrick Cooper and Edwin Irwin Cooper, also emigrated to the United States the following years. A son, Austin Sisson Cooper, and daughter, Elizabeth Cooper Corcoran, remained in Ireland; yet, both sadly died before their mother.

R. Cope, in North Dublin Registration District, undignified register, folio 474, “Second page,” stamped no. 04395624A, entry 421.

Laura Jane died 28 Nov 1921 of liver cancer and exhaustion from toxemia (blood poisoning) at Meath Hospital. At the time of her death, she was living at 22 Liberty Lane.

Laura Jane is buried in Mt. Jerome Cemetery in Dublin at Grave C-106 Grant 2760. This information was researched by a genealogist in Ireland for one of my Boyd cousins. On the actual cemetery card it stated the informant as George Corcoran, her son-in-law. I would love to see a photo of her headstone, if she has one.

Walter Ernest Cooper (1866-1949)

The Old Cooper Bible
Photo taken from his Declaration of Intention 1933

The Grave Digger

Walter Ernest Cooper is the seventh son and tenth child of Austin COOPER and Elizabeth GIBSON born 13/14 Aug 1866 in Moate, Co. Westmeath, Ireland. I find his birth Registration through microfilm #0,101,132 from Salt Lake City. Austin is listed as a station master. The Moate Railway Station is the stop between Mullingar and Athlone. Today it is a dilapidated station.

I was so thrilled as this was the first time (2005) I saw Elizabeth Gibson Cooper's name on an official document. I was disappointed that the microfilmed copy was so poorly done with the dark shadow over his date of birth.

"Ireland Births and Baptisms, 1620-1881," database, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FR3X-8HL : 8 December 2014), Walter Ernest Cooper, 13 Aug 1866; citing 0024,MOATE,WESTMEATH,IRELAND, reference ; FHL microfilm 101,132. Accessed 5 May 2005.

At age 18, two years after his father’s death, in May 1885, Walter with his younger brother, Ashley Joseph Cooper, 16, on the S.S. City of Rome, immigrate together to New York City. Their mother, Elizabeth Gibson Cooper, sailed to New York City the year before in 1884.

"New York Passenger Lists, 1820-1957," digital image, Ancestry.com (http://www.ancestry.com : accessed 19 May 2017), Image 722 of 1059, Line 498, Walter Cooper entry, citing List Number 490 of National Archives Microfilm Publication M237, Roll 485; Ship City of Rome out of Liverpool, R. W. M[???] master, arrived New York on 1 May 1885.

By the 1900 US Federal Census, I find Walter Cooper, a boarder, in the small town of Rocky Ford, Colorado, about 170 miles southeast of Denver. Nothing else is stated about him and several other boarders.

In 1910, Walter has moved up to Denver living in the Riverside Cemetery Boarding House, stating he came to US in 1884 and going through his Pa[pers] process for Citizenship. He is a gravedigger at the Riverside Cemetery. This led me to search for his Citizenship Papers which I found on Ancestry.com.

1920 finds Walter as a cemetery caretaker, but living on his own on the road “Near Cemetery.” This census states he was Naturalized in 1895. Was this in Travis, Texas? Much has happened between 1883 to 1900 that I have no record.

1930, he is still a cemetery worker in his own place.

This decade was when I find a record of Walter filing his Citizenship papers in Denver, Colorado.

He filed his Declaration of Intention on 2 Mar 1933 in Denver, Colorado.

Colorado, State and Federal Naturalization Records, 1868-1990. NARA NAI Number: M1192. Record Group Number: 21. ancestry.com : accessed 19 May 2017. Walter Ernest Cooper. 2 Mar 1933. Declaration of Intention File No. 11402.
Interesting to see recorded that he had made a previous attempt on filing a Declaration of Intention in Travis, Texas, on 4th November 1890. I will have to follow up on this paper work. He waited too late to follow through to the next step of Petitioning while in Texas.

His next step was his Petition for Citizenship which he filled out on 30 Aug 1935. I see his two affidavits are coworkers at the cemetery.

In the1940 census, Walter is a lodger on Humboldt St. still working in the local cemetery.

Walter E. Cooper died on 12 Apr 1949 in Denver, Colorado. He is buried in the cemetery he worked at most of his life. Riverside Cemetery is the historical cemetery of Denver.

Find A Grave, database and images (http://www.findagrave.com : accessed 21 Apr 2013). memorial page for Walter E. Cooper (1866--1949), Find A Grave Memorial no. 23411535, citing Riverside Cemetery, Denver, Denver County, Colorado; the accompanying photograph by Bob Rohwedder is materially informative,
The family Bible was found here in Denver back in 1960. A lady found it in an old boarding house on Speer Blvd. for ten cents. She posted on Ancestry.com Message Boards back in 2003 a transcription of the back cover. I discovered the family Bible in 2006, typing in “Arthur Lincoln Cooper.”  I had the Bible in my hands a week later. Is this the family Bible that belonged to Walter, even though his name is not entered in it? His younger brother, Ashley Joseph’s birth date and location are entered in at a later time in different handwriting. See original post “The Old Cooper Bible.” http://familyfilmfabricfood.blogspot.com/2017/01/the-old-cooper-bible.html

Walter outlived all 14 of his siblings.

This brings more family mysteries to solve. What happened to his sixteen year old younger brother, Ashley Joseph COOPER? I will cover Ashley's story soon.

Elizabeth Cooper Corcoran 1881-1921

Photo in possession of cousin, Dolores Keenan
Elizabeth Cooper was the second living daughter of Alexander Sisson COOPER and Laura Jane BOYD. I originally found an Elizabeth COOPER born on 4 April 1878, in Dublin, Ireland, to above parents.

"Ireland Births and Baptisms, 1620-1881," database, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FRHM-MPX : 8 December 2014), Elizabeth Cooper, 04 Apr 1878; citing Dublin, Dublin, Ireland, reference ; FHL microfilm 256,003. accessed 26 July 2003.

When Irish church baptism records were available online at www.irishgenealogy.ie, I found Elizabeth’s baptism record.

Department of Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs, "Church Records," database with images, IrishGenealogy.ie (https://www.irishgenealogy.ie/en/ : accessed 9 Dec 2010), image, baptism registration of Elizabeth Cooper (29 June 1881, Church of Ireland’s “Parish of St. George,” County Dublin), citing Registration filed by T. S. Berry, Clergyman, page 48.
I found this Elizabeth COOPER, of same parents, with a different birthdate of 30 April 1881, three years later. Does this mean the first Elizabeth died before 1881? This is a known child naming tradition. See details of Laura Jane Cooper’s records from Rotunda Hospital with birth of unnamed daughter on 30th April 1881, mentioned in husband’s post Alexander Sisson Cooper (1854-1927) Part 1 at
http://familyfilmfabricfood.blogspot.com/2017/01/alexander-sisson-cooper-1854-1927-part-1.html

Going directly to The Irish Records website, I find an Elizabeth COOPER who died in Dublin North at the age of 0.

Department of Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs, "Civil Records," database with images, IrishGenealogy.ie (https://www.irishgenealogy.ie/en/ : accessed 14 January 2021), image, death registration of Elizabeth Cooper (4 April 1878, 142 North Strand Road, North Dublin,  County of Dublin, city of Dublin), citing Group Registration ID 7008735; registration filed 4 April 1878 by J. P. Nowlan, in North Dublin Registration District, J. R. Ferguson Register, folio 439, “First page,” stamped no. 07198165, entry 114.

The Coopers are living at two different addresses, which is seen in all of their children’s birth registrations or baptisms. Alexander seems to move around as his family grows.

Elizabeth COOPER marries George CORCORAN on 30 Nov 1900, in St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Chapel.

The following year, Elizabeth gives birth to their first daughter, "Shiela" CORCORAN, in Dublin, Ireland. See blog post The Letter that Started it All, about a letter that "Sheelagh" wrote to her uncle, John Carrick Cooper “Jack”, who was my my grandfather.

Condon, in South Dublin Registration District, unidentified register, folio 678, “Second page,” stamped no. 01754923, entry 280.
Notice the date Sheila is born, 31 March 1901, the same day the Ireland Census was taken nationally by the country. While Elizabeth and Sheila were in the Holles Street Hospital, I find George later that evening visiting his brother, Thomas Corcoran at 49 Upper Dorset St. in Dublin. I am sure he is upgrading his family that this wife, Elizabeth, and daughter, Sheila, are doing just fine. Another thought, where were George and Elizabeth living  when Sheila was born; 49 Upper Dorset St. or 34 Carlingford Road?

Their second daughter, Dorothy was born two years later on 20 Feb 1903. My only clue that this unnamed child is Dorothy, is an 8 year old girl named Dorothy with the George and Elizabeth Corcoran family in the Dublin 1911 Census posted below.

I find out later that Thomas Dowling, Dorothy’s brother-in-law was married to her younger sister, Angela. Dorothy never married. She died 1 Aug 1952 in Clontarf, a suburb of Dublin.

A son, Alexander George Corcoran arrived on 13 Nov 1905.

Eleanor Laura Corcoran came on 26 Jan 1908; she died of acute meningitis four years later on 26 Feb 1912.

Finally, Angela Corcoran was born on 19 Aug 1915. Notice the address of 12 Annesley Place from Sheelagh's letter dated 1917.

I later find out that Angela Corcoran married Thomas Dowling, Jr., the brother of Kathleen Dowling. Alexander and sister, Angela, married two other siblings, Kathleen and brother Thomas Dowling. In genealogy terms, their children are called "double cousins." Interesting how this family tree intertwines!

I will have to order Angela and Thomas's Marriage Registration from Roscommon. They were married on 19 Aug 1945, as told by one of their granddaughters.

I do not know much about Elizabeth COOPER Corcoran and her family as to what is shared here in my blog. I hope to find more answers with these clues found here by hearing from descendants of George and Elizabeth CORCORAN.

POST SCRIPT:

I wrote this blog several months ago, waiting for the proper place to add Elizabeth’s story. This past month, I found a connection on Ancestry.com with a possible second cousin here in the United States. I gave him a call. He was a match! He also connected me with more of his family who could fill me in with answers to the questions filling my head as I researched my grandfather’s older sister.

I have been in touch with several Corcoran cousins from Ireland and Canada with phone calls and e-mails sharing photos and stories that confirmed with me what I already had discovered, but with no verification. The information now all makes sense. Elizabeth's photo above is from one of these cousins.

I was told that Elizabeth died in 1921. That was the same year her mother, Laura Jane, died. I found her death registration on www.irishgenealogy.ie as well as most of the above images.

She died on the 11 Sept 1921, two months before her mother. The cause of her death was Disseminated Sclerosis which she dealt with for 3 years. Today it is called Multiple Sclerosis.  Her children: Sheelagh (Irish spelling) was age 20, Dorothy age 18, Alexander age 16, and Angela age 6. Angela shared her memories with her children of sitting with her mother on her wheelchair. Both Alex and Angela were sent to live with a Corcoran uncle and aunt. Their father, George Corcoran, remarried six years later in 1927. George died on 13 Sep 1937.

I will share more about this family as their stories come to life!
